Carnival MedallionClass™ Cruises
In 2016 Carnival Cruise Lines began a huge upgrade to their Guest experiences. This program showcases new technologies and features that cascade across the entire end-to-end experience from initial online browsing for a cruise, to booking a trip, to on-ship activities and port excursions. This initiative was guided by two former Disney executives who had seen the success of the My Disney Experience project that I had been involved with… so they engaged with me again! The first phase of this program was rolled out on Carnival sub-brand Princess and will continue expanding across the fleets for years to come.

The massive breadth of this multi-year (and still going) IoT project is hard to represent…
but I will highlight relevant aspects below.

Screens, Screens, Screens!
Multiple Device Targets
Web, mobile, smart TV, tablet, digital sign, door panel, Apple TV, Fire Stick, Roku, and more were all included platforms for this expansive project. Our team helped define these platforms and then needed to design with consistency across this vast landscape… or should I say waterscape!
Component Libraries
The massive diversity of endpoint devices required an equally massive amount of components to retain consistency across experiences. There were also nearly 20 companies involved in the project so solid documentation was required by all groups to keep things aligned. Our team developed UX/UI designs, workflows, presentations, and prototypes which fed into this bigger system.
Motion and Interaction Design
Unique interaction models and motion designs helped enhance the new experiences. I conceptualized and helped design many of these across the various devices and platforms.
Interaction Examples
Take a peek at these videos to see an example of the assortment of interactions created across the new MedallionClass ships. Again, I was involved in most of what you’ll see.

Screen Relationships
Digital Signage, Phone, Tablet
Some examples of the TV and Digital Sign interactions. Since the Guest could access their data from multiple screen types, we organized the more complicated content into a consistent column structure to keep placement as familiar as possible.
